Sailor, Davids Online Alias, hat er sich ausgesucht weil es etwas mit dem "durchqueren des Unbekannten" zu tun hat. Schätze mal so wie Seeleute früher die auch nicht wußten wie weit das Meer geht, also vergleichbar mit dem Internet.
Hat er vor nicht allzu langer Zeit mal irgendwo gesagt. Kann das Interview grad leider nicht finden...
Außerdem bin ich sicher das er zu dem Thema noch ein paar mehr Versionen zum besten gegeben hat. :-D

Das ist ja interessant. Bisher habe ich mir dazu noch nie so recht Gedanken gemacht, aber die Erklärung erscheint mir schlüssig. Außerdem kommt das Wort "sailor" doch außergewöhnlich oft in seinen Songs vor (nicht nur in Life on mars). Scheinbar ist das so eine Art Lieblingswort.
