[Album] Young Americans

I heard the news today, oh boy...



Thirty years ago today, the first taste of David Bowie's latest direction was launched upon a completely unsuspecting European public, in the shape of his first slab of "Plastic Soul", 1975's Young Americans 7" 45 single. An edited version had been released in the US the previous month.



Though a select few US fans knew of Bowie's flirtation with the Philly sound, (having experienced it during the tail end of the Diamond Dogs tour, which come to be known as the Soul Tour or the Philly Dogs Tour) the single was quite a shock to David's European fans (albeit a pleasant one) and indeed to anyone who was expecting something else in the Diamond Dogs vein.



Of course, the previous single, Knock On Wood, had been more than a hint of things to come and David scored another Top 30 hit in the US and a Top 20 hit in the UK with Young Americans.



Radio stations in the UK and the US were furnished with an outrageously butchered 3.11 minute mix, (see demo disc above) almost 2 minutes less than the 5.01 minute full single mix which was the same as the upcoming album version.



IMHO, the Young Americans song itself (particularly the lyrics) gives a knowing nod as much to Bruce Springsteen, and his 1973 debut album, Greetings From Asbury Park, N.J., as it does to the sound of Gamble and Huff.



David enjoyed the early work of Springsteen so much that he oversaw the recording of three Springsteen covers from that first album: Spirits In The Night with The Astronettes in 1973 and his own versions of Growin' Up, during the Diamond Dogs sessions, and It's Hard To Be A Saint In The City, during the Young Americans sessions.



Anyway, I'm getting spottery again... The point of this news piece was to inform you of a new 30th Anniversary double disc edition of the Young Americans album due in a few months.



Without the aid of a time machine we certainly have no chance of hitting the exact 30th anniversary date. However, if everything goes to plan, there are going to be some very nice surprises on this one.



I'll post more details, such as release date and tracklisting as I get them.





"Young Americans" ist das einzige Album von Bowie aus den 70ern das ich nicht besitze. Ich warte wohl noch ein paar Monate...

Nee, nee, alle 70er Alben werden so langsam 30 Jahre alt...

Mal gucken, wie die Bonustracks aussehen. Wenn man schon einiges von Bowie angesammelt hat, lohnt sich ein Kauf vielleicht gar nicht mehr wegen der 2-3 Titel, die man noch nicht kennt. :?

Als nächstes wäre dann Station to Station dran. Vielleicht graben sie ja ein paar Liveaufnahmen von der Tour drauf. (Okay, man darf ja wohl ein bisschen träumen dürfen.)

Diese 30th Anniversary Editionen finde ich vor allem wegen der Aufmachung interessant. Sie haben ja alle den gleichen Stil. Soweit ich weiß gibt's doch bisher nur Ziggy, Aladdin Sane und Diamond dogs, oder? Die ersten beiden habe ich mir in dieser Special Edition gekauft und Diamond Dogs hätte ich eigentlich auch noch ganz gerne, aber im Moment muss ich halt etwas sparen. Hoffe, dass es die später irgendwann auch noch geben wird.

Spätestens die Station to Station 30th Anniversary Ausgabe muss ich aber unbedingt haben! Bin gespannt was da wohl für Bonus-Tracks drauf sein werden.

Hunky Dory ist auch schon angekündigt. Schätze das wird wohl erst dran sein. Ist ja auch schon überfällig.

Na ja, du sagst "nur 2-3 Titel", habe schon für weniger mehr ausgegeben...z.B. die "Best of US Tour Edition"...

Es gibt auch eine 30th Anniv. Edition von "ZS - The Motion Picture" - steht wenigstens auf meiner drauf. Auf die "Young Americans" bin ich auch nicht so scharf, aber da ich das Album noch gar nicht kenne, werde ich mir wohl die Geburtstagsausgabe gönnen.

Es ist eine kleine Pappbox im Plastikschuber mit zwei knallroten CD's, einem Heft mit Linernotes, einem Poster mit Zeitungsartikeln über "the last show we ever do" und einer nachgemachten Eintrittskarte. Ich hab's im Mediamarkt vor ca. 1 Jahr gekauft - alles in allem ganz nett.

Hört sich eigentlich schon so an als müsste man die haben. Vielleicht schau ich einfach mal auf Ebay, ob die da eventuell günstiger zu bekommen ist als im Laden. Kann ich ja auch gleich mal nach der Diamond Dogs, Stage und David Live als Special Edition Ausschau halten.

--30 jahre Ziggy Stardust, in so einem Buch mit Bonus-Disc
--Ziggy -the motion-picture (in einer hübschen Klappbox mit den roten CDs und ein paar gimmicks drin... haben sie letztes jahr bei saturn für 11,99 verramscht! :-D , aber ohne Bonusdisc)
--30 jahre Aladdin Sane (mit Bonus-Disc im Buch)
--Black Tie/white noise - eine sehr schöne Edition mit Bonus disc und Bonus-DVD
--Diamond Dogs... mit Bonus-Disc +Buch  in einem kleinen Slipcase
--Die Bonus-CD-Editions von Outside/Hours/Earthling  - im Slipcase oder separat..

Now that the news has been announced on Bowienet www.davidbowie.com, I can tell you that it hasn't been quiet around our studio in the past month (or two). EMI and DTS are really hot on releasing David Bowie's classic albums in newly mixed 5.1 Surround Sound. I have mixed David Live and Stage, which are available now. I've just finished mixing the amazing Young Americans in 5.1 Surround Sound, too, for its 30th anniversary (has it been that long?). The release will be in a few months. There will be bonus tracks and a surprise.

All the tracks have been mixed from the master tapes to 96khz high definition digital audio. That translates to 'freakin' scary' quality. Mr. Bowie is front and center, but the backing is now spread 360º with Mr. Vandross hovering over your left shoulder for most of the album. John Lennon's six string acoustic is almost entirely in the right rear speaker on "Across The Universe" and you just might hear a comment from him when the song is over. What really brought it home to me was how great David's vocals were, and a lot of them were live takes with him standing in the same room as the band at Sigma Studios in Philadelphia.

You have never heard "Young Americans", "Fame" and "Across The Universe" like this. Oh, don't get excited about young Mr. Springsteen in the photo. He was there only for a visit and we couldn't get him to sing or do anything on "Saint In The City," which was never finished. But it's such a cool photo, isn't it

Leider ist nichts aus der "Young Americans 30th Anniversary double disc edition" Veröffentlichung geworden.
Bei Bassman´s Bowie Page steht irgendwas von Frühjahr 2006.
Das wäre dann aber die 31th Anniversary Edition.

Vielleicht gibt es ja dann auch drei CD´s.
Schön wäre eine Plastic-Soul Tour Live CD.

Aber das sind nur naive Träume  :cry:  :cry:  :cry:
