Glory Glory Hallelujah (John Brown's Body / Battle Hymn... ) | SdT 24.02.2021

Glory Glory Hallelujah bzw. "John Brown's Body" oder "The Battle Hymn Of The Republic"

"John Brown's Body" oder "The Battle Hymn Of The Republic" 😁

Zitat

John Brown’s Body – Wikipedia

Zitat

My West – Wikipedia

Here we go:

Zitat
I never met Bowie in person.
My sister did.

She worked with him,  day in -day out, on a film. An Italian film with Harvey Keitel.

Bowie charmed the entire Italian crew (especialy the elderly seamstresses and the make-up people, whose skill and suggestions he was always keen to admire).

Harvey was the town Sheriff. The 'Good Guy'. The Law Enforcer.
Bowie was the 'Baddy'. Gunslinger and Cold as Ice.

One day they were shooting a scene at night. Bitterly cold, and somewhat rainy.
Keitel was indoors, in the 'saloon'. Bowie only had to pass by outside on his poor, wet, horse; Keitel had to recognize him and say some lines.
Bowie had no line in this scene. In fact, he was doing Harvey a favour actually getting dressed up, getting on the horse, and coming and going under the rain. He was also developing a cold.
For some reason Keitel kept Bowie in this uncomfortable situation for hours, until the Singer, exhausted, asked the director if he could return to the hotel, have a hot shower and...hit the sack.
So the director tells my sister to tell Harvey that David needs to stop.
Keitel has a fit.
He says Bowie is unprofessional and disrespectful.
The director sends my sister to tell Bowie what Harvey thinks.
She heads out into the cold rain (yes, it's raining now), and Bowie bends down from his saddle to hear her.
The whole crew watch, in silence.
They can't hear. They don't speak English.

Bowie stretches back into an upright position, sends a laser-sharp glance through the saloon window to the Director indoors, and sends Michela , my sister, back in.
Next he summons Keitel outdoors, wiggling his index finger  at him in the cold night air.
Everyone looks at Harvey.
At first reticent, he eventually steps outside, ambling up to Bowie's horse.
Again Bowie bends down.
Now he's talking to Keitel. Seems quite calm.
No one knows WHAT he's saying.
Well... my sister does. She's the only one with Headphones on.., and those headphones are wired up to Bowie's microphone as he talks.
He's saying:
" Now listen Harvey; I only came to do this Goddammed 'Spaghetti Western' 'cause I wanted to work with you again*  and take a break from my music. Little did I know you were such an asshole and such a creep.  Tomorrow's my last day and I'm outta here.
I'm not going to have you f#*k up my Italian adventure, and leave a bad taste in my mouth.
Now... you go in there again; and you go and tell the Director you have absolutely NO need of me out here on this sorry quadruped. Tell him; "David can go to bed".  OK !?? "

Michela took her headphones off and penned this brief outburst onto the back of her script. She was the film's interpreter.

By the time Harvey was mumbling something to the Director, Bowie was galloping through the night to his Hotel.

* They had worked together on Scorsese's  'The Last Temptation' many years before, but on different days.

Armer David 😢

Daher schon "armer David

Oki, als The Battle Hymn Of The Republic hat auch O'Leary seinen Senf dazu abgegeben :)

Zitat
It’s a testament to Bowie’s screen charisma that the first 45 minutes of the film, which mainly entail a neutered Keitel reuniting with his family of dreadful actors, feel like place-setting. When Bowie finally arrives, with his crew of albino, Rastafarian and fashion plate gunfighters, the film becomes entertaining at least (first Bowie line: “Well now this place stinks worse’n a mule’s ass…and somebody’s already shittin’ their pants!“), if it soon indulges in cheap sadism and misogyny. But it’s mainly just dismal: the final fight between Keitel and Bowie is so poorly shot, scripted and blocked that it can be read as an intentional deflation of the Western myth, if said myth hadn’t been intentionally deflated dozens of times before.

One of its only good scenes is, not surprisingly, when Bowie sings. In homage to (and ripping off) The Night of the Hunter, Bowie and his crew surround Keitel’s house at night, and Bowie rasps out a serenade. Where Robert Mitchum in Hunter had sung “Leaning on the Everlasting Arms,” Bowie sings “The Battle Hymn of the Republic”** and caps off his performance by breaking his guitar over the head of the village idiot.

Recorded in Garfagnana, Tuscany, during the filming of Il Mio West, June 1998. The film was released in Italy in December 1998 and, under the title Gunslinger’s Revenge, as a US DVD in 2005.

Die Zeitschrift nannte es "Battle Hymn of the Republic". Die Musik könnte von William Steffe sein.

Lyrics

Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord
He is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored,
He has loosed the fateful lightening of His terrible swift sword
His truth is marching on.
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
His truth is marching on.
I have seen Him in the watch-fires of a hundred circling camps
They have builded Him an altar in the evening dews and damps
I can read His righteous sentence by the dim and flaring lamps
His day is marching on.
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
His truth is marching on.
I have read a fiery gospel writ in burnish'd rows of steel,
As ye deal with my condemners, So with you my grace shall deal;
Let the Hero, born of woman, crush the serpent with his heel
Since God is marching on.
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
His truth is marching on.
He has sounded form the trumpet that shall never call retreat
He is sifting out the hearts of men before His judgment-seat
Oh, be swift, my soul, to answer Him! be jubilant, my feet!
Our God is marching on.
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
His truth is marching on.
Ln the beauty of the lillies Christ was born across the sea,
With a glory in His bosom that transfigures you and me:
As He died to make men holy, let us die to make men free,
While God is marching on.
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
His truth is marching on.

John Brown's Body

John Brown's body lies a-moldering in the grave
John Brown's body lies a-moldering in the grave
John Brown's body lies a-moldering in the grave
But his soul goes marching on
The stars above in Heaven are looking kindly down
The stars above in Heaven are looking kindly down
The stars above in Heaven are looking kindly down
On the grave of old John Brown
Glory, Glory, Hallelujah
Glory, Glory, Hallelujah
Glory, Glory, Hallelujah
His soul goes marching on
He captured Harper's Ferry with his nineteen men so true
He frightened old Virginia till she trembled through and through
They hung him for a traitor, they themselves the traitor crew
But his soul goes marching on
Glory, Glory, Hallelujah
Glory, Glory, Hallelujah
Glory, Glory, Hallelujah
His soul goes marching on
